Travelling Like The Light: VV Brown is a Force of Nature on the Album
Q Magazine notes that VV Brown is a “force of nature” on her debut album Travelling Like The Light, due for release (but available for pre-order!) on July 13th. This is an entirely accurate and able-bodied description of VV’s sound, which is otherwise a bit difficult to hash out; the singer solders so many styles together so deftly that the results are astoundingly unique.
“The fifties style is a constant on the album,” VV tells Catch a Vibe, “but it also features some reggae and samples of African music. And just like on the singles, the lyrics are important. I want them to be witty, and they’re going to be mainly about relationships.”
Though it may be a risk to sample from so many types of music, VV proves with Travelling Like the Light that she is so talented a singer, songwriter, and producer that she knows just how to compose a killer tune without overdoing it.
VV describes her musical style as “fifties synthetised madness,” and on her debut album she notes that “seventy per cent of the songs are upbeat and it’s got ballads as well, but it’s definitely got a rhythmic base to it.”
In addition, music on the album is subject to familiar sounds from old school Gameboy and Nintendo games. VV wrote all of the music on Travelling like the Light, and was involved in every aspect of its making, including playing instruments heard on the tracks.
VV’s latest single from the album is “Shark in the Water,” a track which has been garnering quite a bit of radio attention, and was described by Popjustice as “immediately brilliant – a reinterpretation rather than a continuation of the ‘indie doo wop’ schtick she’s been working on over the last couple of singles and therefore a lot less stylized and a great deal more accessible.”
Q Magazine paid special attention to the singer’s debut single, “Crying Blood,” calling it “a rockabilly-tinged hurricane.”
